LAST WEEK…

Friday, October 28: Springfield Jr. Blues 5, Janesville Jets 4
Shots: Jr. Blues 30, Jets 29
PP: Jr. Blues 0-3, Jets 1-3

The Janesville Jets (9-4-0-1) battled back and tied the game on four separate occasions, but were unable to answer the Springfield Jr. Blues’ (5-9-0-1) fifth goal and lost a yo-yo match to fall to second place in the Midwest Division.

Early in the first, Springfield’s Luke Picek (2:54 1st) got things going in the Illinois capital to give his Jr. Blues the lead. Halfway through the period, Jakov Novak (10:25 1st) finished a pretty passing play from his linemates, twins David and Ben Schmidling to tie the game at ones.

The second period was a scoring explosion, with five back-and-forth goals, including three in fifty seconds of play. Former Jet Brandon Puricelli (4:51 2nd) regained the Springfield lead, before Jets leading scorer Chris Dodero (9:29 2nd) again tied the game. Late in the period, Puricelli stretched the ice and had a partial breakaway, but was hooked from behind by his former billet brother Jack Gates, earning a penalty shot. Puricelli beat Jets goaltender Derek Schaedig for his second goal of the game. Thirty-two seconds later, Brown commit Michael Maloney (17:05 2nd) scored his eighth goal of the season, and his sixth on the power play, a stat which leads the North American Hockey League. Puricelli registered an assist just eighteen seconds after that on a Matt Cassidy (17:23 2nd) goal which gave Springfield their fourth lead of the night. Janesville then replaced Schaedig with Jake Barczewski.

With family in the stands, Kip Hoffmann (3:17 3rd) scored to tie the game for the fourth time with his third goal of the season. Springfield’s Alex Peck (10:12 3rd) finally scored the game winner past a screened Barczewski.

Though allowing just one goal, Jake Barczewski (2-1-0-1) took the loss with eight saves on nine shots. Springfield’s Evan Fear (2-3-0) was good enough for his second win of the season, making 25 saves on 29 shots.
Saturday, October 29: Springfield Jr. Blues 2, Janesville Jets 5
Shots: Jr. Blues 27, Jets 27

PP: Jr. Blues 1-6, Jets 1-6

The Janesville Jets (10-4-0-1) struck for four third period goals to emphatically rebound with a series splitting victory on Saturday over the Springfield Jr. Blues (5-10-0-1).

The game opened with eight minor penalties called in the first period, four per side, in a tightly called contest. With Cullen Munson in the box for holding, Springfield’s Ryan Leibold (3:20 1st) scored just seven seconds into the man advantage. Despite the slew of opportunities to follow, each team successfully killed their minors to end the frame.

The middle frame appeared to head in the same direction, with three minors called in the first ten minutes, but the officials then eased off. Late in the period, Colorado College commit Jack Gates (16:51 2nd) evened the game, 1-1, with a redirected shot from Carter Ekberg.

Janesville exploded in the third period to bury Springfield with three unanswered goals, taking a 4-1 lead. Cullen Munson (4:24 3rd) opened the streak with a jam play. Keegan Miller (8:41 3rd) slammed a puck won off a faceoff by Brendan MacLaren. Kip Hoffmann (10:30 3rd) buried a shot on his second breakaway of the night, but Ricards Bernhards (11:33 3rd) scored for Springfield about a minute later, keeping his team within striking distance. Late in the period, on a two man advantage, Peter Bates (18:04 3rd) put home a cross-crease pass from Cole Paskus to bury the dagger.

In front of his family, Jake Barczewski (3-1-0-1) turned away 25 of 27 shots in the winning effort, while fellow ’99 goaltender Evan Fear (2-4-0) was hung for the loss in a 22-save performance.
